well a few of you asked me if this game was any good.....
i've been playing some Battlefield Bad Company 2 BETA, and really like it, its beta so there are still some bugs in it... like the Server browser, which has to be the worst POS server browser ever, filters don't work... and it isn't sorted by ping...
the game itself is solid, quite beefy on the graphics so i have to run it on Medium - finally a game that has pushed my old 8800GTS - it looks great though.
everything on the map can be destroyed
- which sometimes can be a bit over the top, but it really changes how the game is played - one round you can be kicking ass on the attack, but the next time you play you could be getting whooped because there's no more cover left (if you hold back too long and all the trees get destroyed, then you're well open and it makes for a change of strategy).
In the beta the game mode is only for one map, in which one team is attacking and the other team is defending - there are 2 computers/crates on the map which have to be defended, the attackers have to either destroy the computers
, or plant timed explosives on it... they have to do it to both objectives and once they do they have captured that zone .... at which point another section of the map becomes open where they have to push forward and take another 2 computers.. and so on, there's 4 sections.
one thing that's different from other BF games is that the other sections are closed off
, you can't just flank the enemy and stroll down there, you will get killed for leaving the battlefield - might think that's a bad thing, but i think it works out well, it keeps the fighting more centralised rather than really spread out
medics are back, can revive players and throw medkits like BF2, plenty of guns to unlock too. the tanks in it are good fun, when you shoot at a tank you see bits breaking off it as you damage it, which is a nice touch - the quadbikes are really good for flanking the enemy - the helicopters are difficult to fly like in every BF game I've played
anyone can fly them too, you don't need to be a certain class. Also from what ive seen so far, there's less lameness with the helicopter and people camping for it to spawn - because the helicopter is only in the 3rd and 4th section on the map, the defenders can't just run back and get it... since that zone hasn't been opened up, so helicopters are not prominent until the end of the map - only the defence has it, not the offence
theres no prone in the PC beta, its not really a big deal but it would be nice for the snipers
- having to hold down Crouch key is a bit of a pain, there is no "toggle" for it that I can see... also it wouldn't bind my mouse thumb button on my logitech G5... probably need logitech drivers
you can knife people and collect their dogtags still
All in all it looks to be a fun game --- oh another thing I noticed is that there is no Commander anymore - one player can control a UAV drone, by using a computer at the spawn point, but there is no elected Commander, nor is there any orders from above, or supply drops etc.. like previous games... squad leaders don't seem to have much in the Order department either that I can see, probably a limitation due to Consoles, I don't know but it works ok
my guess is Battlefield 3 will be the real Battlefield game with all that stuff, until then Bad Company 2 is less complicated and very fun - I think it will do well against MW2
oh I played the demo of this game on PS3 also, its much easier on PS3, less skilled players, more aim assist... easy to pwn on there. on PC today I was the top player in the game and had 1337 points
Cons
: No prone, shit server browser, can't see your ping after you've joined the server, or kill/death stats when in-game (only when game is over - otherwise all you get is your points score, which is more important tbh may help ppl do objectives rather than worry about k/d)
Pros: well its a very fun game to play, graphics are great, was ported pretty well to PC (mouse works fine crosshairs still too big tho), plenty of weapons to unlock and knifing people is fun or killing them with the defib:) planting C4 charges on a building with people inside is is rofl... you can make the entire building come down on them
